Every horse’s behavior is telling us something. Our job as horsemen is to see the behavior as communication, not defiance. This is especially true for thoroughbred horses, whose behavior has been shaped by their earliest experiences at the track.
One of the most celebrated jockeys of all time, Garrett Gomez, was born into a racing family. As a small child, Garrett would use the arm of his couch as his racehorse, wearing his father's helmet and boots, and dreaming about winning the Kentucky Derby. His passion for horses led him to start training and riding them.
